10 House Plants for your Apartment and How to Care for Them
House plants are all the rage right now, so we have put together a list of our favorite house plants that will help you bring the outside in, while also creating a fresh and vibrant oasis in your apartment or townhome.
HoyaA Hoya loves bright light but also indirect sunlight. These fabulous plants also enjoy humidity, so to care for this plant, consider misting once a week and let the soil dry between waterings.
Rubber PlantA rubber plant is cousin to the famous fiddle-leaf fig, but way less work! These plants do best with bright and indirect light. Rubber plants like more moisture during the summer months but need less water during the winter months. Aim to keep the soil moist during the growing months (summer) and switch to about once a week during the winter.
PileaOh, oh, pilea! Okay, so it’s not like the song Ophelia from The Lumineers, but this plant loves its humidity, so an excellent place for this one would be a bathroom. This plant also does well in areas with bright and indirect light. Like the other plants we have listed, let the soil dry between watering, so aim for about once a week.
Spider PlantIf you don’t have a green thumb, this plant is for you. A Spider plant might be the easiest going of all the house plants out there. These plants enjoy bright and indirect light and can be watered when the soil is no longer moist.
Prayer PlantIf you are looking to add a little color to your plant collection, a red prayer plant might be for you. Like all the others, these plants enjoy their light, like to be watered regularly and misted about once a week. They can also tolerate low light every now and then but prefer to be in their desired bright light.
Fiddle- Leaf FigVaulted ceiling and big windows? The fiddle-leaf fig might be the right plant for you. This plant requires medium light and really only needs to be watered when the soil is dry and no longer moist.
CactusOkay, okay, this might be the easiest plant on the market! Also, not to mention, with just one look at a cactus, it will have you feeling like you are in the desert. To best care for a cactus, water during the growing season about once a week and during cooler months (hello winter!). Cacti love sunshine, so place in an area that gets lots of light.
Snake PlantIf you don’t have a lot of light in your living space, another great option for a house plant is a snake plant. A snake plant can tolerate low light more than other house plants even though they still enjoy their sunshine just as much as the average joe. For the best care for the snake plant, water occasionally and allow the soil to dry before watering again. They also like temperatures between 60-80 degrees Fahrenheit.
Aloe VeraEven though the sun shines the most during the summer months, you won’t need store-bought aloe vera with an Aloe plant. Aloe Vera is low maintenance compared to other plants. This plant enjoys a window with sunshine but only needs to be watered about every two weeks.
PothosA pothos is a plant all about versatility! These plants enjoy hanging pots and being near a window, and not to mention these plants even thrive in different lighting environments. Fun fact, this plant is known for its air-purification methods and can help your living space feel more clean and pure.
